How Do You Know Spanish?

Spanish is my first language. With family, I moved from the Dominican Republic to the US at age four. Because I learned English when I was so young, I'm lucky to be fluent in both languages.

Aside from editing and proofreading English works since 2010, I've been a Spanish-English medical interpreter since 2014. This means I frequently interact with Spanish speakers from all over Latin America and the world to help them get adequate medical care, even if they aren't confident in their English. Before being hired, I took a language literacy test:

Ms. Ruiz demonstrated an overall outstanding level of bilingual fluency in English and Spanish. She spoke both languages with the proficiency of a native speaker, using complete sentences, clear pronunciation, an ample vocabulary, and proper grammar and syntax. You can see the full results here.

I also use Spanish in my everyday life to interact with family and friends and to enjoy Spanish-language movies, music, books, and of course, poetry. Spanish is as much a part of my life as English.

Why Poetry?

Translating any text from English to Spanish (and vice versa) is an art (not a science) but not in the way it is with poetry.

After all, as award-winning literary translator Aaron Coleman said in this short clip about poetry translation, poetry is "as much a thing of words as it is a thing of sound," which is one of the reasons so many of us love it, and why it's my favorite thing to translate.

A consideration with any translation is which word to choose when presented with several options. With poetry, when these options create unique sounds in the way of assonance, alliteration, rhyme, and more, and each comes with differing articles whose own sounds further affect the whole, the choice makes a huge difference; it goes beyond conveying meaning and into the territory of sound, and from there, imagery and feeling.

Though for short poems, I'll likely point out any grammatical issues as a courtesy, for longer poems or entire books, I highly recommend requesting editing and/or proofreading before Spanish translation.

"I Wrote a Poem in Spanish."

I can also accommodate translation from Spanish to English. Just get in touch, and we'll discuss!
